A friend & former writing partner once made the mistake of recommending a bio of Billy Wilder to me. In it, there's a story about I.A.L. Diamond suggesting that they do the final draft of The Apartment. This was several months after the movie had been out. I kept trying to use this as a defense for my need to constantly edit, but it just annoyed her, which is one reason we no longer write together. But to my mind, it's the perfect anecdote.
