Going Slightly Mad

I cannot settle down to work today. My head is too full of...stuff.
1. I'm feeling completely sick about this election. I'm sick at the prospect of having to hit the barricades to keep my marriage from being invalidated. I'm sick at the idea of Canadian kids being sent to fight George Bush's war. And I don't know who I'm more angry with -- Paul Martin for getting himself into this mess or Stephen Harper for forcing an election before anyone really had time to figure out who did what to whom. And if I see Jack "Nader" Layton, I'm going to kick him in the nuts.
And is nobody else worried by the fact that Harper actually said that we should depend on the Liberal-dominated Senate to protect us from him?? WTF?? Firstly, the Senate is not going to block legislation that's passed in the House of Commons. Secondly, he's telling us that he's going to behave in such a way that the Canadian people might wish to hide under the skirts of the Senate. And nobody's going to be able to say that he didn't warn us.
2. I'm stressing about this job for K. They said they'd be contacting people on or about today to set up interviews. It's one o'clock and we've heard nothing. That's not necessarily bad news, but I'm in knots about it.
3. I've been burying my head in the fanfic sand to avoid thinking about items 1 and 2. This is not necessarily a bad thing, because, since there's not a bloody thing I can do about the election or this job, I might as well make use of all this nervous energy. But thinking about elevator sex when I'm supposed to be coming up with a new communication strategy for a huge policy initiative? Not really the best use of my brain.
*sigh*

Date: 2006-01-23 06:23 pm (UTC)I'm definitely there with you on #1. I'm having the most impossible time concentrating on work. Harper has been a crafty bastard this election and Paul Martin's campaign has been a disaster and...yeah. I'm going to be in knots until I can vote and then I'm going to be in almost as many knots until the election results come in. I'm staying up late (for me, anyway) to watch the coverage. I'll be online, too, if you want to commiserate or (one can only hope), celebrate.
Thank goodness it won't hurt anything if I just do data entry for most of the day.
As for #2, I'm sending many good thoughts in your direction. *crosses all available digits and limbs*
I can't regret #3, though. More twoweevils fic!
Still..*more hugs*

Date: 2006-01-23 11:14 pm (UTC)Also, Harper has been a crafty bastard this election--you said it. He's digging deep into the neocons' bag of tricks, that's for sure. I'm keeping all my digits crossed for Canada.
*hugs*

Date: 2006-01-23 06:55 pm (UTC)And, of course, talking to my wife. Who will continue to be my wife, no matter what. We're married in the eyes of God and the United Church and I have the pictures to prove it. So Stephen Harper can just step off, lest he be smited.
I'm hoping that C-SPAN will carry the election results from CBC Newsworld like they did last time. Then we can watch and obsess and gnaw our fingernails together. *sigh*
The rant below is not aimed at our flist, really--I just don't have any other place to vent my spleen.
What the hell is wrong with people? Hey Canada, guess what? That man with the candy and the cute puppy wants to lure you into his van and drive you off into the woods and eviscerate you! And do unspeakable things with your corpse! And he even told you he wants to do it, and you're even thinking about getting in that van? After what happened to your neighbor? Wake up!
*kicks people who think any politician anywhere is more than passingly honest, and yes, I'm including my boyfriend Barack Obama in that*
Also, this is well worth reading, especially for Americans who are wondering what the fuss is about--not that I think there are too many of those here.
For thirty years now, I have listened to Canadians trying to define what distinguishes them from Americans, and it always baffles me because it so simple.
I can put it into a single word: kindness.
He goes on to say that a Conservative government would...oh, just read it. This should probably be an entry of its own, but I'm too sleepy and stressed to even cut and paste right now. Keep your fingers crossed for the government, is all.

Date: 2006-01-23 07:28 pm (UTC)But you know what? I do feel kind of victorious. I can't vote in Canada's election, but I just called both my US senators and urged them to support a filibuster against the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. It probably won't do a lot of good, but to paraphrase The Great Escape,, I think it should be the sworn duty of liberals to harass the enemy to the best of their ability.
I send a lot of e-mails and sign a lot of petitions, but I don't usually call politicians. This felt gooooood. I may do it again next week! Take that, neocons!

Date: 2006-01-23 07:33 pm (UTC)I hope that you don't have to suffer the types of crooks and swindlers that we have been forced to endure. It is as if someone is holding the US hostage. I was going to fly to europe this summer on Air Canada, because of you all being less of a target. How fast do you suppose that will change? Troops abroad. Following the cabal that leads this nation into war after war? I will light a candle for the Canadian spirit to rebuke the shysters from the south...

Date: 2006-01-23 08:05 pm (UTC)My sympathies. That's exactly how I felt during the last two US presidential elections (for very good reason, as it turned out).
All of you up there in Canada are very much in my thoughts today -- as is K, for whom various digits remain crossed.

Date: 2006-01-23 10:03 pm (UTC)Well we have John Howard here In Ozland and he is a wanker. Too much of a George Bush lapdog. So I know how you feel about sending troops off to fight in Bush's wargames. Back home we have Tony Blair. But he's not too bad when it comes to certain issues.
I hope and pray that Canada doesn't invalidate your marriage. That is so wrong on many levels,. Goverment has no right to tell you who you can and cannot marry. I was always quiet proud of Canada for their forward thinking. I was also quiet proud of UK for abolishing their rules on same sexed couples in Armed Forces. Now with new laws in place for same sexed couples... I was hoping that this would spread to Australia and rest of CommonWealth. The eventually to US.
Keeping fingers crossed that the idiots don't get in.

Date: 2006-01-23 10:05 pm (UTC)Stephen Harper (and the Conservative/Reform party) scares the bejesus out of me. Always have, always will. I hope the majority of Canadians come to their senses before marking that X on the ballot. I think if we do get a Conservative minority, it won't last as long as the liberals...but maybe I'm being optimistic.
Fingers crossed for a good outcome in the election and the job situation!

(I, however, voted sensibly. After strongly considering one Trevor Grover of the "Canadian Action Party", because it is the combined names of my boyfriend and my favourite Muppet, I got sensible and instead went for the Greens. Because when Jack Layton lets you down, there's nowhere else to turn.)

Date: 2006-01-24 02:30 am (UTC)Like K said, our marriage is valid in the sight of heaven, the United Church of Canada, The City of Toronto, and the Province of Ontario. If Harper wants to mess with us, there will be smiting.
